SALMON MEAL AUTHENTICATION PROGRAM REACHES 100% COVERAGE IN CHILE

Portada-logo.jpeg

Chilean salmon meal producer Pesquera la Portada has become the most recent company who has qualified for the authenticity certification program offered by the Norwegian laboratory company ORIVO. About ¾ of all salmon meal used for pet food worldwide is now being certified by ORIVO, and Chile is the first country where all salmon meal producers are enrolled in this independent 3rd party authenticity testing program.

Being the first country where all the producers are qualified for the ORIVO-certification puts Chile in a unique position in the salmon meal industry. Magdalena Errázuriz, International Sales Manager from Pesquera la Portada sees this is a sign that the raw-material producers in Chile are responding on changes in consumers demands:

During the recent years, we have seen a clear trend among pet owners that they care more and more about the composition and the origin of the pet food they are buying. As a response to this we want to help our clients, the pet food producers, to ensure consumers that the salmon meal they are buying is 100% authentic. With ORIVO we have found an independent 3rd party which can help us document just the type of information the consumers are looking for in a way which is both reliable and easy to communicate.

Together with Chile, Norway has been one of the pioneers in developing large capacity production facilities with the sole purpose of processing offcuts from the salmon farming industry. Also here, ORIVO´s certification has gained a strong foothold. Other nations are now following this trend, and several new production facilities for processing salmon offcuts has been built the recent years. For ORIVO, the growing focus on authenticity is good news:

Currently, we are certifying around ¾ of the global production of salmon meal used for the pet food industry, which is a figure we are very proud of. However, with several new production facilities being built around Europe, with the sole purpose of supplying salmon meal to the pet food industry, we expect that more salmon meal producers will join the program shortly. After all, the overall goal is for ORIVO is to help the honest and responsible players in the industry protect their category, says CEO of ORIVO, Svein Erik Haugmo.

The basis for the certification is a lab test which makes it possible to verify species and geographic origin of the analysed salmon meal samples. A substantial R&D effort, partly funded by The Norwegian Research Council and Innovation Norway, has formed the groundworks of the test which utilizes sophisticated laboratory technology combined with big data analysis.

The certification is also being used as a verification seal for omega-3 dietary supplements to humans, and ORIVO is currently expanding the scope of the technology, which will enable testing of complex samples such as finished pet food products directly from the store shelves.

GOED members wanted as project partners - no financial contribution REQUIRED!

Lab-2.jpg

ORIVO is seeking project partners for another industry innovation: Authentication of omega-3 concentrates. The aim for the project is to analytically match samples from omega-3 concentrate producers with samples from finished product formulations. This will enable brand owners to verify that they have used the claimed raw material from their trusted suppliers, and such brand owners are now encouraged to join ORIVO in this exiting industry innovation.

The project is funded by Innovation Norway, a Norwegian public funding organization, and Golden Omega is already recruited as the concentrate producer partner in the project. Other concentrate producers are also welcome to contact us, as the outcome of the project is planned to be a testing system available for all producers in the industry. But as for additional project partners the main focus is to recruit brand owners.

The main activities for brand owner project partners will be split into two:

Technical activities:

To develop a reliable laboratory protocol, a lot of testing needs to be done, mostly on real products - both based on Golden Omega´s concentrates and other producers´ raw material. Project partners therefore need to contribute with product samples and ingredient lists, the performance and cost of the laboratory work will be covered by ORIVO.

Promotional activities:

Such a technological innovation will enable brand owners to rethink their promotion/media strategy, and a very important part of this project is to work together on topics such as: Media tools (Promo movie clip, illustrations, certification logo, commercial language), promotion channels (Product logo, product campaigns, web commercial, trade show activities), etc.

Why join and be associated with this project?

A couple of years ago we saw significant adulteration among various brand owners such as "18/12 salmon oil" and krill oil consisting of fish oil and soy lecithin. However, lately the impression is that the industry as a whole is becoming more and more serious and responsible, and a very recent study performed by ORVIO in collaboration with GOED showed little to no adulteration among the top selling US omega-3 brands. This is a positive trend for the industry, which goes well along with another highly interesting trend: Modern consumers demand to be assured the origin of what they are eating. This means that behaving responsible and sourcing sustainable is not enough anymore - to differentiate you need to validate your story. Including the ORIVO certification in the storytelling has been a successful journey for clients in various business segments already. By joining as a project partner in this particular project you will have a unique chance to influence, and become part of the story.

Brand owners using non-Golden Omega concentrates in their products could ask "Why should we participate in this project?" There are two good reasons: Firstly, the promotional part of the project is most important for brand owners, and this part is designed to be generic, not necessarily linked to Golden Omega as the supplier of the omega-3 concentrate. Secondly, to validate the test results and eliminate false positives, we also need samples from brands using non-Golden Omega concentrates.

Discuss the project during GOED Exchange

We would be happy to explain more and start the first discussions with possible project partners during the GOED Exchange in Seattle in February. We will be holding a short presentation during the Pre-conference workshop, so please reach out to us us after that, or contact us in advance to make an appointment. NOTE: No financial contribution is required from the project partner in this project.

ORIVO TO DEVELOP NEW TECHNOLOGY FOR AUTHENTICATION OF OMEGA-3 CONCENTRATES IN COLLABORATION WITH GC RIEBER OILS AND WORLD CLASS R&D-INSTITUTES

Gc logo.jpg

ORIVO has, in collaboration with GC Rieber Oils, initiated a project with SINTEF Ocean and the University of Nantes to develop an authenticity testing method for fish oil concentrates. The method will be able to analyse any given concentrated omega-3 supplement in the ORIVO lab, and within minutes determine the species and geographic origin of the product. ORIVO has already established this methodology as an existing service for natural omega-3 supplements. Based on products from the Norwegian industry leader GC Rieber Oils, different technological approaches are now being tested for implementation of this same service for omega-3 concentrates. The aim is to have a validated technology ready in 2-3 years - for the benefit of the entire industry and customers worldwide.

The present way of proving the origin of finished omega-3 concentrate products is based on paper documentation and raw material testing, since no general third party verification methods are available to test and verify authenticity of the finished products. Development of such a method will increase sustainability, consumer safety and prevent loss of market shares for honest and responsible producers.

This is something that GC Rieber Oils, a Norwegian producer of omega-3 concentrates and ORIVO, a Norwegian company dedicated to authenticity testing of marine ingredients, wish to change. In collaboration with two significant and distinguished research institutions, SINTEF Ocean (Norway) and the University of Nantes (France), the companies have started a project where the aim is to investigate the potential of several highly advanced laboratory technologies to be used for authentication of omega-3 concentrates. The knowledge developed in this feasibility study shall form the basis for a larger R&D-project, where the goal will be to develop a 100% precise laboratory test for verifying the origin of any product based on omega-3 concentrates. The ambition is that the technology, which will be developed in close collaboration with the industry, will be ready for the market within 2-3 years.

“We want to take our deep commitment to sustainable and responsible sourcing of fish oil one step further by participating in this project and develop a technology for authentication for omega-3 concentrates. Verifying that the omega-3 concentrates found in the supplements market meet the highest demands for quality, sustainability and food safety is a benefit to our customers and the entire industry”, says Jan Roger Bjerkestrand, CEO of GC Rieber Oils.

For technical reasons, it is not straightforward to decide the origin of the altered fat molecules, which concentrated omega-3 products are composed of. In this project, the hope is that using state-of-the-art nuclear magnetic resonance and isotopic measurement technology will make this possible. The collective expertise and experience in the project group regarding authentication of food, advanced measurement technology and omega-3 concentrate processing is expected to lead to a successful outcome.

“Without the cooperation of the omega-3 industry, this project would not be possible. We are impressed by the commitment that GC Rieber Oils, representing a major player in the omega-3 supplements industry, has to sustainability and responsibility. This makes them a valued participant in this project”, says Svein Erik Haugmo, CEO of ORIVO, and adds that GC Rieber Oils has been supportive to ORIVO´s development ever since the establishment in 2013.

The project is partially funded by the Norwegian Regional Research Funds (RFF Midt-Norge).

GOLDEN OMEGA BECOMES THE FIRST OMEGA-3 CONCENTRATE PRODUCER THAT HAS OBTAINED THE ORIVO CERTIFICATION

GoldenLogo.jpg

Golden Omega has become the first omega-3 concentrate producer to successfully obtain a certification from ORIVO, ensuring pure raw material sourcing. Through independent third party testing from ORIVO, all the raw material involved in Golden Omega´s production, has now been verified as pure anchovy from the South-Pacific Ocean, and will be continuously verified through raw material monitoring. In addition, ORIVO and Golden Omega have recently launched a major development project, which aims to further strengthen the traceability for Golden Omega´s products all the way into consumer-ready omega-3 concentrates.

Through an on-site factory audit combined with thorough sample collection and testing of Golden Omega´s fish oil ingredients, an extensive certification program has been established. The certification involves both surveying trade documents, mass balance calculations and actual ingredient testing. Such certification is the first of its kind in ORIVO´s portfolio.

The agreement we have entered with Golden Omega is another major milestone for ORIVO. As concentrated omega-3 represents over 40 % of the market for human omega-3 supplements, we have had this segment on our development list all the way since our start-up in 2014. To have Golden Omega on board as our first client from this segment is especially satisfying, as they are very committed to source crude oils from a single species fishery for their full portfolio of omega 3 concentrates, says CEO Svein Erik Haugmo from ORIVO.

The ORIVO technology and certification are already is in use for natural marine ingredients such as omega-3 oils and salmon meal. The ability to actually test finished products and trace them back to marine species and geographic origin has been the important advantage over other certification programs. According to CTO in ORIVO, Erik Fuglseth, the aim is to introduce this finished product testing also for concentrates:

For technical reasons, it is not straightforward to decide the origin of a chemically altered fat molecule such as concentrated omega-3 products are composed of. In order to be able to offer a consumer-ready certification logo on finished products in near future, we have started a very promising project. The aim is to confirm that a finished product consisting of pure Golden Omega concentrates matches the chemical fingerprint of oil collected directly from the Golden Omega´s production in Chile. In the longer run, 2-3 years from now, we will be able to authenticity test any concentrate product.

Golden Omega is the first producer to start using the authenticity test for concentrated omega-3 ingredients. The background for doing so is quite obvious according to Commercial Director of Golden Omega, Claudio Aracena:

For the first time we are now able to certify through a 3rd party test that our products are based only on authentic anchovy oil from the South-Pacific Ocean. We have of course never had doubts about it – we see this rather as a very valuable tool to offer all our clients full transparency about the marine resource that is being used in all our concentrates. The feedback so far from our customers is also that this certification will be very valuable and assuring for them and the consumers of their products.

AN INDUSTRY WIDE VERIFICATION PROGRAM ENSURING AUTHENTIC PET FOOD INGREDIENTS

Molde, Norway - April 3rd, 2017

While the pet food industry worldwide creates headlines due to the use of misbranded and adulterated ingredients, there is a ground-breaking initiative among the main suppliers of marine ingredients to pet food. As the first salmon meal producers in the world, Biomega and Marine Harvest from Norway, and Fiordo Austral from Chile, are now offering authenticity tested salmon meal to their pet food customers. The authenticity has been verified by the Norwegian laboratory company ORIVO (previously named OmegaVeritas), through a independent 3rd party authenticity testing program.

The test, which is the first of its kind, is based on the already established test for salmon oil and other omega-3 oils, and is able to verify species and geographic origin, by confirmation with ORIVO´s database of reference samples. A substantial R&D effort, which partly has been funded by The Norwegian Research Council and Innovation Norway, formed the basis for the test and the database, which originally was established as a the basis for a verification seal for dietary supplements to humans. But now, ORIVO has adopted the methodology to also work for salmon meal. Chief Technology Officer in ORIVO, Erik Fuglseth, explains how:

We started with a simple hypothesis: Since salmon meal consists of 5-15 % of fat, the idea was to extract this fat, and use this as a fingerprint for the meal. Following an extensive R&D effort with testing and process optimization, it turned out that the method worked just as we had hoped. We now have developed a gentle extraction method that gives us a fat fraction suitable for our authenticity testing protocol.

In addition to this fat based technology, ORIVO has already commenced further development: The goal is to introduce an enhanced DNA based test for pet food ingredients within the next year. With this new tool in hand, ORIVO will be able to offer their verification program to more than just salmon meal suppliers:

Salmon meal is just one of many highly valued ingredient categories within the pet food market, and the impression we have gotten from the market is that adulterated products is a substantial and growing challenge. This is of course a sad fact, but when for instance salmon meal has a price premium over standard fish meal, there will always be players in the value chain trying to make easy money. We now have a validated system which can help the honest and responsible players in the industry protect their category, says CEO of ORIVO, Svein Erik Haugmo.

Haugmo also values the industry support:

To have the backing from the majority of the salmon oil/meal producers during the development has been crucial in order to ensure a successful build-up of the verification program. Especially satisfying is it that more than 60 % of the global supply of salmon meal to pet food already is being sold as verified, through our customers Biomega, Marine Harvest and Fiordo Austral.

New name, new logo - Same company!

Molde, Norway - February 2nd, 2017

When OmegaVeritas was founded in 2013, the target was, as the name quite accurately describes, to certify the origin of omega-3 oils. As for many startup companies, a need to adjust the original business idea soon arose, and this caused the once so precice name to become less accurate.

Quite quickly, clear signals from both the pet food and feed industry made the company expand the application areas of the technology from only marine oils, to including both meal and oil. Adulteration of Peruvian fishmeal in China and cheap raw materials mixed into salmon meal for dog food in the US were some of the specific challenges the market relied on OmegaVeritas to solve. In some parts of the industry, OmegaVeritas has also too often been associated with the company DNV-GL, known just as “Veritas”. This mix-up was unfortunate both for DNV-GL and OmegaVeritas.

Based on an overall assessment, the company has therefore decided to go into the next development stage with a new name. The new name is less descriptive and more unique, but it is still strongly linked to the company's core activities, which are "Origin Verification of Omega-3s". We are proud to present:

Orivo_logo.jpg

Our new name and our new Orivo seal can hopefully soon be seen on an omega-3 supplement or a pet food product in a store near you.

WORLD´S FIRST COD LIVER OIL VERIFIED BY AN AUTHENTICITY TEST

Molde, Norway – December 6th, 2016

As the first Cod Liver Oil (CLO) brand in the world, the authenticity of the brand OmegaMare+ offered and owned by Natural Pharmaceuticals (NP), has now been verified by OmegaVeritas (OV) through an independent 3rd party authenticity test.

OmegaMARE2.png

This revolutionary test guarantees that all batches of OmegaMare+ originates from Norwegian Arctic cod. OmegaMare+ is the second brand in NP´s product portfolio which earns the OmegaVeritas verification seal. The salmon oil product OmegaMarineForte+ was approved earlier this year. The OmegaVeritas test is based on a validated and trustworthy routine. In addition to sampling and laboratory testing of all product batches, products will randomly be picked from store shelves/web shops by independent 3rd parties and tested by OmegaVeritas.

- IMPORTANT COMMITMENT FROM VESTERAALENS AS

With valuable contribution and reference samples from all over the industry, including the market leading CLO producers Vesteraalens, Orkla Health and Lysi, OmegaVeritas have optimised and validated analysis protocols, software algorithms as well as created a reference database for CLO. – As always, it is crucial to have the main producers join us as partners to ensure a qualified and successful build-up of the category in our reference database. We greatly appreciate the time and effort they have put into the project. This shows that there is an interest and a need to protect the cod liver oil category, and a need for the services we are providing, says CEO Svein Erik Haugmo from OmegaVeritas. Since the CLO market is a quite sophisticated category with several differentiating parameters – both regarding quality and origin, Vesteraalens AS have seen the value of working closer with OmegaVeritas:

– As the first CLO producer in the world, Vesteraalens have entered into a closer collaboration agreement with OmegaVeritas. In addition to the signing of a running Sampling Partner Agreement, we have different R&D topics planned. We also intend to enter into a running verification program for our CLO in 2017, says CEO of Vesteraalens, Viktor B. Johnsen.

The development project with Vesteraalens will allow OmegaVeritas to expand their services In the CLO market.

- A QUALITY SEAL FOR NATURAL PHARMACEUTICALS

The first available version of the CLO-test is now fully validated and commercially available on the Natural Pharmaceuticals product OmegaMARE+. Every bottle of OmegaMare+ is now equipped with a OmegaVeritas-seal, confirming the authenticity of the CLO source. As brand owners, Natural Pharmaceuticals is first of all using the OmegaVeritas test to give the consumers the important information that they can trust & relay on the Norwegian origin of the content in OmegaMARE+.
The CEO Ulf Oldenborg in Natural Pharmaceuticals explains why this new seal is so important:

– We have never had doubt in our suppliers – so it was no big surprise that OmegaVeritas confirmed that our OmegaMARE+ consists of the highest quality cod liver oils from Norway. But since there is a wide range of CLO supplements offered, we hope this new seal will work as the extra assurance our customers deserve when they choose to buy our products. We are already convinced that 3rd party testing is the only true way to assure our customers, and we expect this new origin seal from OmegaVeritas to be recognised as the gold standard among omega-3 supplements.

- GROWING LIST OF SERVICES

CLO is the most recent addition to the growing series of tested and approved categories in OmegaVeritas´ reference database:

– Following the successful launch of krill and salmon oil authentication earlier this year, cod liver oil was a natural next step for us. Products branded as pure CLO might be a blend of cod and other fish species. Therefore we really see a great potential in this test. Every brand with 100 % CLO as OmegaMARE+ should protect their label claim by start using our origin verification seal. The launch was originally set for Q2 2017, but a substantial interest from the market made us speed up the development and launch this already now, says CEO Svein Erik Haugmo from OmegaVeritas.

OmegaVeritas offers subscription programs with random analysis and mandatory next-level-in-value-chain checkpoints, batch certifications, product, as well as product screening and benchmarking. The range of verified categories is constantly under expansion, and several are in development at present.

OmegaVeritas proudly announce The Scoular Company as their next collaboration partner!

The Scoular Company has entered into a commercial collaboration agreement with OmegaVeritas. The aim of this collaboration is to have OmegaVeritas authenticate the species of Scoulars fish oil offering with their proprietary O3V-technology.

Scoular and OmegaVeritas have begun by targeting strategic marine oils from its offering for species verification. This collaboration will allow Scoular to offer its customers a greater degree of transparency then what is currently available to them. The decision to partner with OmegaVeritas came from the demand from Scoular.

"To be able to document the authenticity of our oil through an actual test is something we at Scoular believe will add value to both our producers and our customers. The service OmegaVeritas is offering aligns well with our strategy of being a company with high integrity, acting in a responsible manner in all parts of our business."
Joe Andrus at The Scoular Company

OmegaVeritas CEO, Svein Erik Haugmo, explains why this collaboration is such a milestone for his agile team: ”Scoular is a distributor that handles a wide variety of oils and ingredients through a very complex supply chain, and this collaboration opens important market opportunities for OmegaVeritas: Together with Scoular we can now address a wide range of both supplement and pet food brands with this new and differentiating authenticity branding opportunity.”
The two parties have several categories in the pipeline and expect to launch these subsequently in near future.

WORLD´S FIRST SALMON OIL PRODUCT VERIFIED BY AN AUTHENTICITY TEST

As the first salmon oil brand in the world, the authenticity of the brand OmegaMarine Forte + offered and owned by Natural Pharmaceuticals, has now been verified by OmegaVeritas through an independent 3rd party authenticity test.

The recently established test, which is the first of its kind, is able to verify both ingredients and end consumer products. A substantial R&D effort, which partly has been funded by The Norwegian Research Council, formed the basis for the test. Together with the Norwegian salmon oil producers Biomega, Marine Harvest, Nordlaks and Nutrimar, OmegaVeritas has optimised and validated analysis protocols, software algorithms as well as created a reference database for salmon oil. The aim was to build a system that is efficient and valid, while also ensuring integrity and transparency.

To have the salmon oil producers join us as partners has been crucial in order to ensure a successful build-up of the reference database. We greatly appreciate the time and effort they have put into the project. This shows that there is an interest and a need to protect the salmon oil category, and a need for the services we are providing, says CEO Svein Erik Haugmo from OmegaVeritas.

The authenticity testing tool for salmon oil is already commercially available. The system has been thoroughly tested and the results validated that the analysis is efficient and accurate. A selection of commercially available salmon oil products has also been analysed, and, not surprisingly, the results showed that not every salmon oil product contains what is stated on the label.

Following the recent successful launch of krill oil authentication, salmon oil was a natural next step for us. Salmon oil is a high priced product category and we now have a validated system which can help the honest and responsible players in the market protect their category, says CEO Svein Erik Haugmo from OmegaVeritas.

Natural Pharmaceuticals is the first brand owner to start using the authenticity test for salmon oil products. Their OmegaMarine Forte+ brand consist of 35% natural salmon oil and 65% concentrated fish oil. Natural Pharmaceutical welcomes the new test, and believes this soon will be used by all brands containing high valued natural oils.

– For the first time we are now actually able to verify through a 3rd party test that our product is based on authentic salmon oil and in correct amounts. We have never had doubt in our suppliers – rather confirmed that we are using the best suppliers, but this is obviously valuable for us as a company and our customers, who now can be even more certain that they are getting the premium quality salmon oil when they buy our products, says CEO of Natural Pharmaceuticals, Ulf Oldenborg. We are convinced that with the introduction of this 3rd party test, Natural Pharmacuticals are, together with OmegaVeritas, setting a new international level of quality control for omega-3 products containing salmon oil.

OmegaVeritas offers subscription programs with random analysis and mandatory next-level-in-value-chain checkpoints, batch certifications, product verifications (with possibility to use the verification logo on the label), as well as product screening and benchmarking. All services have special sampling routines solving third party sampling challenges. Eventually there will be a wide range of offers servicing different value chain actors – including retailers and consumers.

Press release

A NEW LABORATORY TEST TO VERIFY AUTHENTICITY OF ANTARCTIC KRILL OIL PRODUCTS

OmegaVeritas can now provide independent 3rd party authenticity verification for Antarctic krill oil products – being able to verify both ingredients and end consumer products.

– For the first time, there is a laboratory test available to test the origin and authenticity of Antarctic krill oil based products. Krill oil samples are technically challenging to analyse, but we have now established a validated system which can provide highly accurate results, says CEO Svein Erik Haugmo from OmegaVeritas.

During a 1 year long development project funded by Innovation Norway, OmegaVeritas developed, optimised and validated sampling procedures and logistics, analysis protocols, software algorithms as well as created a reference database. The aim was to build a system that is efficient and valid, while also ensuring integrity and transparency.

– Everything is now in place. As a last project step and final validation, we have been collecting and analysing commercially available krill oil products. This work will be completed in May, but initial results confirm that our analysis is efficient and accurate. Also, the results are indicating that not every krill product contains what is stated on the label, explains Haugmo.

The successful build-up of the reference database was important in contributing to accuracy. Two vertically integrated Antarctic krill oil suppliers, Aker Biomarine AS and RIMFROST AS, were the industry partners in this project and crucial in providing authentic reference samples. Having their own vessels and ability to fully trace batches to the precise krill harvesting times and locations was important for ensuring a large enough spectrum of authentic samples – from different times and geographical origins.

The authenticity testing tool for Antarctic krill oil will be commercially available from June 2016 onwards.

– We are at risk of losing money every day due to adulterated products. With strong support from the industry, OmegaVeritas has now developed a tool for purchasers that will assist in isolating products that are 100% authentic krill oil, explains CEO John Cameron from RIMFROST NZ.
– As often happens with successful, premium ingredients, the krill oil category risks being attacked by suppliers with adulterated, low cost products. The result of this project is a third party verification service, which might prevent this adulteration from happening, CEO Matts Johansen from Aker Biomarine AS adds.

OmegaVeritas offers subscription programmes with random analysis and mandatory next-level-in- value-chain checkpoints, batch certifications, product verifications (with possibility to use the verification logo on the label), as well as product screening and benchmarking. All services have special sampling routines solving third party sampling challenges. Eventually there will be a wide range of offers servicing different value chain actors – including retailers and consumers.

OmegaVeritas will give a presentation on “Transparency and label claims in the omega-3 industry” at the GOED Pavilion (stand I152) during the upcoming Vitafoods trade show on Wednesday 11th of May at 13:05. The session is open to everyone.
